Trump Spending Freeze Causes Conservation Chaos
By now you’ve probably heard that the Trump administration’s freeze on spending shut down Medicare terminals nationwide and even had members of his own party concerned it was affecting their constituents. What you may not know is that it also potentially affects conservation organizations who often rely on matching Federal funds to run their programs. It also affected state and federal agencies who were unsure they would be able to continue to staff and operate ongoing conservation work. These are essential programs that fund wildlife management, habitat improvement, and public access. The Trump administration has since rescinded that order, but the situation is still ambiguous. There is an excellent write-up on this story at Outdoor Life. Keep your congress people on speed dial. We can’t afford to have conservation, access, and wildlife efforts undermined. Keep in mind the donations you make to organizations like Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, the National Deer Association and others are often met with matching Federal funds for specific projects. Budgets are set, and personnel hired with these matching funds in mind. They also froze Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson funds. These are taxes you pay on outdoor gear specifically to go towards conservation. Make your voice heard. Don’t let your hard earned donations go to waste.
Hookswain Asks “What is the mushin of Fly Fishing?”
I’m sharing this here because I thought it was important. Every few years someone looks up from their casting and asks “What the hell are we all doing?” It’s a good question to ask from time to time, and the author, Jacob Sotak walks us through his thought process. It’s a good article and I encourage you to read it.
The question is, what should we all do? I have some ideas I’ll share in a future article on ways to lessen our impact on the fish and rivers we love. In the meantime give it a read and think about it. I’m open to suggestions so drop me a line.
